Shaikha Al Nowais Appointed as First Female Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Taking Office in 2026
In a historic decision, the UN Tourism General Assembly in Riyadh confirms Shaikha Al Nowais as the next Secretary-General — marking the first time a woman will lead the global tourism body in its 50-year history.
In a landmark moment for global tourism, the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) has confirmed Shaikha Al Nowais as its new Secretary-General, marking the first time in the agency’s 50-year history that a woman will assume the top leadership role.
The confirmation came during the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly, held in Riyadh, where Member States formally ratified her nomination with overwhelming support. Al Nowais, who will begin her five-year term in January 2026, succeeds Zurab Pololikashvili, the outgoing Secretary-General credited with strengthening the organization’s global voice and visibility.
Shaikha Al Nowais brings with her a wealth of experience from the private sector. She currently serves as Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels, and chairs the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s Tourism Working Group. She also holds board positions with the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and the Les Roches Hospitality Academy — underscoring her deep involvement in both tourism leadership and education.
Addressing delegates at the General Assembly, Al Nowais said:
“This is a triumph for all of us. It reflects our collective vision for a stronger, more connected, and more compassionate world of tourism. Together, we represent the hopes of millions whose lives are touched by this sector.”
Outlining her vision for the years ahead, the Secretary-General-elect highlighted five core priorities — Responsible Tourism, Capacity Building, Technology for Good, Innovative Financing, and Smart Governance — each aimed at making the global tourism sector more inclusive, resilient, and people-centered.
Her appointment was the highlight of the first day of the Assembly, which gathered representatives from 160 Member States. The event followed the conclusion of the 124th Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, which reviewed progress on ongoing initiatives focused on investment, innovation, and education in tourism.
Shaikha Al Nowais’s leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on collaboration, sustainability, and technological transformation — setting a new course for the future of global tourism.
