Historical Aircraft : BELL X-1
The first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight.
The Bell X-1, also known simply as the X-1, was a U.S. rocket-powered supersonic research aircraft built by the Bell Aircraft Corporation. This iconic plane was designed to explore and push the boundaries of high-speed flight.
On October 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager piloted the X-1 to achieve an extraordinary milestone. The aircraft exceeded the sound barrier, reaching a speed of 1,126 km/h (700 mph), or Mach 1.06, at an altitude of 13,000 meters (43,000 feet). This historic achievement marked a turning point in aviation and opened the door to the supersonic era.
